The Madison Theatre in Albany, N.Y. has changed hands, and the prospects have business owners and other stakeholders excited for the opportunities that the revitalized moviehouse could bring to the neighborhood. Darren Grout and Gunther Fishgold, the theater’s new owners, tell me their investment will further their Tierra Coffee Roasters brand. Tierra operates the coffee shop next door to the theater and a second Albany coffee shop next door to the Spectrum Theater on Delaware Avenue. Grout and Fishgold closed the landmark, seven-screen theater on Sept. 8 to begin a two-month remodeling involving

major cosmetic changes and downsizing to two screens. They are doing most of the work themselves. Check out the slideshow at the right for a nostalgic look inside the Madison, and read about the neighborhoods’ slow rebirth in this week’s edition of The Business Review. The two partners are also principals in Tierra Farm, an organic coffee roasting and manufacturing center in Valatie in Columbia County, 20 miles south of Albany.
